| I find it wise to be careful about what you reveal about yourself because it would only reinforce my perspective of the transitive nature of identity. It hard to dictate what self-identity is because it is an ever evolving process. My work explores the transitive nature of identity by presenting just small pieces of a person's identity. The owner of the identity allows various pieces of it to be put into play without providing the necessary context to ensure that what other people interpret is correct. Similar to today's internet social networking sites of My Space, Facebook and Twitter where the user is in control of what one knows about them and the viewer is the interpreter, I as an artist will take the pieces to create a body of work that is a collection of an overall perspective of the topic, and the views of the surrounding community, personal and social standards and funnel that information into an artistic piece. I try to gather theses perspectives because I find that the power of culture, as an influential force, is dynamic and is able to reflect the embodied transitive state of anyone's identity. I also find that growth of a person's community and acceptance of identity comes from conflict, ideas and actions, and that a person may never learn if they always accept anything as a given. I think that pushing boundaries and keeping an open-mind about a diverse amount of topics provides a strong path to creating artwork that can stimulate the thought process of the viewer. |
